How is rekeying different from replacing my locks?+

Rekeying changes the pin tumblers inside the existing lock cylinder so old keys no longer work, while the lock body, hardware, and door remain untouched. Replacing a lock means installing an entirely new unit. Rekeying is generally the faster, less invasive option — especially important in GF New York buildings with vintage mortise lock hardware where the door itself may be difficult to modify. Our technician will tell you on-site which option your locks actually need.

Can you rekey a mortise lock? My building has old door hardware.+

Yes — mortise lock rekeying is one of our core specialties. The mortise lock style is extremely common in pre-war and mid-century buildings throughout upper Manhattan, and our technicians carry the cylinder removal tools and pin kits specific to these mechanisms. We remove the cylinder carefully, repin it to match your new keys, and reinstall it with proper alignment so the full latch and deadbolt function within the mortise case exactly as before.

Do I need to be home for the rekeying appointment?+

Yes. An adult with legal right to the property must be present. Our technicians will ask for a photo ID and, if you're a tenant rather than an owner, a copy of your lease or a similar document confirming occupancy. This is a firm security policy we follow every time — it protects you just as much as it protects us. If your landlord is coordinating the rekey, they can also be present in your place as the authorizing party.

What factors affect the price of a home rekeying service?+

Several real variables determine the final quote: the number of locks being rekeyed, the lock types involved (a standard door knob lock is straightforward; an antique mortise lock cylinder takes more time and specialized pins), whether the job is a scheduled daytime visit or an after-hours emergency locksmith call, and your location within the GF New York service area. We confirm the exact price before starting any work — you'll never see a charge that wasn't agreed to in advance.

Can you rekey all my locks to work on one key?+

Absolutely. 'Keyed alike' setups — where your front door knob lock, deadbolt, back door, and any other entry points all operate on a single key — are one of the most common requests we get. Our technicians carry a wide enough assortment of key blanks and pin kits to match cylinders across multiple lock brands in one visit. We'll let you know during the quote if any of your locks are incompatible with a keyed-alike configuration.

Is rekeying really safe if I've lost a key and don't know where it is?+

Yes — it's the recommended response to a lost key. Once a lock is rekeyed, any copy of the old key is completely useless; the new pin configuration requires a different cut to operate. You don't need to know where the lost key went for the rekey to be fully effective. If there's any sign that a lock was tampered with rather than simply having a key go missing, our technician will flag that during the on-site inspection and recommend whether additional security upgrades make sense.
